In the Garden of Gethsemane

"O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."

As I was reading in Matthew 26 today, I came upon this verse. You can feel the anguish in Jesus' soul as He asks His Father if there is any other way. I always took this verse as meaning that Jesus didn't want to die, but that He would be willing to.

I was mistaken.

I read in the footnote of my Bible that His real sorrow was knowing how His Father would feel when He did die. Christ wanted to be the sacrifice, but He wanted to spare His Father the pain af seeing His only Son die. He loved His Father that much.

Yet He still died for a wretch like me.

" O my Father.... nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."
Matt. 26:39
