Someday Man

Someday Man

Daddy and I sit at the table
Eating fresh bread with jam.
We talk about my someday,
And I say of my someday man,
"Who wants a knight in shining armor?
Or a prince on a big white steed?
A cowboy in dusty chaps and
Boots is really all I need."
But then my Daddy says to me
In that wise, knowing voice of his,
"So you think you need a cowboy?
Let's have a little quiz.
You want a man who is saved?"
Is the very first question
"Oh, yes," I answer back quickly.
"I won't have an unsaved one."
The second question comes right after,
"And he's surrendered to the Lord,
And willing to follow where He leads,
And is always reading His word?"
I nod my head in the affirmative,
And then my Daddy says,
"You want a man who loves the Lord,
And you want a man who prays?"
I nod again to show I approve.
"You want a man who works real hard,
At anything he puts his hand to,
With a reputation that ain't marred?"
"Yes, Daddy," then listen for more.
"You want a man who doesn't shirk?
A man who thinks an aching back
And sleep-full night is good pay for work?
You want a man who don't mind dirt?
At his work, but not in his home?
Who likes cows, horses, and pickup trucks,
And wide open spaces to roam?"
"Well, Daddy, maybe that last part
Really ain't important, I guess.
It's just something I'd like."
"Like that he looks better that the rest."
"Right. I guess ya'd call it an extra."
"Extra to what?" Daddy wants to know.
"To being saved, surrendered,
Being ready when the Lord says, 'go'.
I guess I really just want a cowboy,
Because what I need is a man
Who's a saved, surrendered, Bible-
Readin', hell-fire preachin' man.
A Baptist man who loves the Lord,
And loves his country, too.
A man who'd give his life and
Limb for the old red, white, and blue.
A man who gives his best
And works hard at what he does,
Be it ranchin', farmin', fixin' things,
Or preachin' about God's love.
One who rises to the challenge
And one who don't smoke or chew.
Hey, Daddy, you know what I just found?
My man sounds a lot like you!"
Daddy just laughs and nods his head.
"He sure as shootin' sounds like me."
"Do you think God would at least
Have him wear cowboy boots, Daddy?"
