{ HOME TOUR | kitchen }

Welcome back to the home tour! I kept putting off posting about my kitchen because there's a constant stack of dishes by the sink and junk on the high counter. But I finally weeded everything out and took pictures quick yesterday.

Step through the dining room, and you'll enter the kitchen. I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of the layout {I wish the island was back a little further} but it is much bigger than my old kitchen and I love having all the cabinets plus a pantry, which is behind the door on the right.
 This is a look at our little breakfast nook. Sorry about the lighting...I tried to edit them and once again couldn't get the edited pictures onto blogger. Does anyone have a recommendation for a picture editor? Anyway, This little bay window area looks out on a pretty little redbud tree. We don't really use the table for many meals but I do use it a lot for a workspace. I'm not a huge fan of the chandelier but it may just be the stainless steel look that throws me. I have thought about painting it black.
 Turning to the right, I have a little bit of a dead space. I used to have a chair sitting there but I had to commandeer that for my sewing table. I think I need a pie safe there or something, don't you? The pictures on the wall were made by me and my sister. She also made the gingham table runner on the little table.
 Here's a little glimpse of the high counter. From left you see a Philodendron {just about the only plant I do well with}, my recipe box {which is on the brink of too small}, an embroidered picture of a hen and chick, a chicken on a candlestick, a gingham jar to hold stuff, a picture of my grandma doing what she did best {I have it there to remind myself to do the same-serve selflessly}, and another chicken figurine.

My kitchen really doesn't have a theme but I guess it leans on the chicken-y side HA! Someday I'd like to have some bar stools here but mercy, they are expensive.
 A glance at the sink area and cabinets. I really like having the glass fronted cabinets for my dishes, but the problem with all these cabinets is that I can't reach the top shelves anywhere! I believe the ceilings in this house are 12 foot, so that gives you an idea of how tall the cabinets are. Needless to say, my stool has gotten a lot of use in the year that we've lived here.

It's a little hard to see, but the pendant light above the sink was a $10 score from a discount store about an hour away. Before my husband installed this light there was a fluorescent bar light mounted on the bottom of the wood piece above the sink but it gave the kitchen a fish bowl feeling when I was washing dishes so I was pretty elated to find the pendant. Plus it uses the vintage style Edison bulbs, which are right up my alley.
 This is a quick zoom in on my canisters. I love the look of canisters and the vintage/farmhouse feel they lend. Some of these I acquired from El Paso, some from Walmart and Goodwill, and the chicken one was a gift. The clipboard on the right is what I use to hold my recipes while I'm cooking. It tends to keep the recipe cards clean and safe from messy cooks {I'm raising my hand}.

Let's talk about the tile for a minute. I really like it! I love the look of subway tile, but I also love tans and browns so I'm content with this backsplash for now. If we ever do renovate the kitchen I may have some hard choices to make.

Lastly, this is the view from the living room, where you can see the stove and dishwasher. I actually took this picture after I decorated for the summer yesterday, so that's why red,white, and blue bunting magically appeared. Plus the stack of boxes in the corner for yard sale this weekend.
 The next post will be the living room, which I have shared before, but of course has changed since then. Ask my husband how much I like to rearrange {it's a little over-the-top}. Plus there will be new mantle decor to see!
